  • A definition of what lying is
  • Reasons why people might tell a lie
  • Why some lies are okay and some lies are not okay with examples
  • How telling a lie may cause you to end up in even more trouble than if you told the truth in the first place
  • A definition of white lies
  • Why white lies can be okay to tell
  • How to know when it's okay to tell a lie and when it's not
  • What happens if you tell a lot of lies
  • Why it's important to tell the truth as much as possible

Total pages: 11 pages

Like all social stories I write, full color photographs of real children are used instead of clipart. In my experience, full color photos are more relatable to autistic children, like my son, than clipart. Diverse children are included as much as possible so that every child feels represented. Written scripts are also given where needed to help provide the child with the language they need to be successful in the given social scenario.

I appreciate the real-life visuals and attempt to teach about the discrimination between 'ok' and 'not ok' lies; HOWEVER, the preview did not show slides within this SS which state "It's ok to lie when you are telling a joke and it makes your friend feel good, or to tell white lies to avoid making a friend feel bad or to gain attention from others so they will like me." I am in shock that this is content being developed for kiddos. I hoped the idea that a lie would ever be ok would be related to safety situations such as someone asking you a personal question about where you live when you don't know them, etc. I strongly disagree with the topics taught in this social story and wish I had not spent the $5 to purchase this. More importantly, I hope this is modified and re-considered, as the principles being taught here are not toward developing strong character or judgment. There are many other communication tools and social skills that can be taught to avoid offending a friend without having to rely on a lie. For the record, I am a BCBA and work with kiddos and adults with an array of disabilities as well as traditional learners. This is not appropriate for any of those learners.
