This social story teaches kids about clothing sensitivities. An editable Google Slides version is included so you can customize the story to fit your needs. This story covers:

  • How certain types of clothing or fabrics can make you feel uncomfortable
  • How uncomfortable clothes can make it difficult to focus or cause anxiety
  • A reminder to experiment with different types of clothing and fabrics to find what feels the most comfortable
  • Discusses soft fabrics vs. stiff fabrics
  • Discusses fit of clothing (tight vs. loose)
  • Talks about things to avoid on clothing (e.g., buttons, tags, zipper closures) or to look for (e.g., hoods, soft fabrics, tagless clothing, plain, no embellishments, specific colors)
  • Discusses wearing layers under clothing that might bother you
  • Talks about strategies when clothing feels uncomfortable
  • Talks about things parents or caregivers can do to help with laundry so that clothing feels more comfortable

Total pages: 15 pages

Like all social stories I write, full color photographs of real children are used instead of clipart. In my experience, full color photos are more relatable to autistic children, like my son, than clipart. Diverse children are included as much as possible so that every child feels represented.
